Does a child born in the United Kingdom automatically become a Polish citizen?
If at least one parent held Polish citizenship on the date of the child’s birth, the child will generally acquire Polish citizenship automatically by operation of law.
However, it is important to remember that holding Polish citizenship is not the same as having a Polish passport.
In practice, it is very common to discover that a child is a Polish citizen but has never been entered into the Polish registers, does not have a Polish birth certificate, and has never been issued a Polish identity document.
The child’s date of birth is crucial
One of the most important factors that must be verified is the child’s date of birth.
The key date is August 15, 2012.
For children born after August 14, 2012, the procedure is usually much simpler. In many cases, it is sufficient to register the foreign birth certificate in Poland and then apply for a Polish passport.
The situation can be considerably more complicated for children born before August 15, 2012.
In such cases, it is often necessary to initiate separate proceedings to confirm possession of Polish citizenship. However, every case requires an individual analysis, as many factors can affect the scope of the required formalities, including the parents’ circumstances and the documents available to the family.
Don’t wait until the last minute
Many parents seek legal assistance only when a specific need arises.
Most commonly, this happens when a family is planning to relocate to Poland, when a child is about to start school or university, when the family is purchasing property, or when there is an urgent need to obtain a Polish passport.

Some of these procedures can take many months, which is why it is advisable to address these issues well in advance.
